Inhibition of the Contraction of the Rat Uterine Smooth Muscle by Bisphenol A
Yong Joon-Hwan

Abstract
Bisphenol-A(BPA) is used to produce polymers for production of polycarbonate and epoxy resins that are used in food containers and dental appliances. BPA binds to estrogen receptors and induces estrogenic activity in a number of biological systems. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of BPA on uterine smooth muscle contraction of the rat. BPA(1 nM - 100 ¥ìM) and ¥â-estradiol(10nM - 100 ¥ìM) produced an inhibitory effect on rat uterine strips contraction induced by high KC1(40 mM) in a concentration-dependent manner. The relaxant effect of BPA and 8-estradiol was similar. Also, the contractile effect of oxytocin(10 ¥ìM) and carbachol(10 ¥ìM) were inhibited by pretreatment with the BPA(10 ¥ìM). These results suggest that the relaxant effect of BPA could be related to the inhibition of calcium influx through voltage and ligand-dependent calcium channel.
